The sinus lift procedure

Step by step

Placing implants in the posterior maxilla is often a challenge due to the frequent lack of bone caused by alveolar ridge resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization. In these cases, sinus lift surgery is performed to raise the sinus floor and increase the amount of bone for implant placement.

Dr. Mickaël Samama, Oral surgeon and Academic Director the Oral and Implant Surgery Department at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris (FR), summarizes the main steps of the procedure and describes the instruments.

The sinus membrane

During a sinus lift surgery, the most challenging step is undoubtedly separating the sinus membrane without perforing it. The average incidence rate of Schneiderian membrane perforation during the procedure is 23.5%. The damage could lead to complications. Dr. Samama gives his advice to minimize the risk as much as possible.
